How to Take Care of Aloe Vera Plants

Don’t have a green thumb, don’t worry! It’s so easy to care for Aloe Vera plants. If you follow the 5 tips below, you will not kill your plant!

Don’t Water Your Aloe Vera Plant too Frequently

You don’t need to water your Aloe Vera plant everyday. When you do water your Aloe plant, make sure to water deeply so the soil is moist. Then wait a few weeks (yes weeks, not days!) for the soil to dry up before watering your Aloe Vera plant again. If you water your Aloe Vera plant too frequently, you can kill your Aloe Vera plant because you will cause the roots to rot. During the summer and spring, plan to water your Aloe Vera plant every 2-3 weeks. In the Fall and Winter months, water every 4-6 weeks.

Give Your Aloe Vera Plant Enough Sunlight

Aloe Vera plant likes sunlight. It can also thrive in indirect sunlight. If you have a window that is South facing, that is a happy spot for your Aloe Vera plant. A western facing window that gets afternoon sun is also a good spot for your Aloe Vera plant.

Make Sure there are Drainage Holes in the Aloe Vera Plant Container

Choose a container with drainage holes for your Aloe Vera plant. Having drainage holes in the container is important so water can drain out and keep the roots and soil dry. You will prevent disease and root rot if you have drainage holes.

Use Terracotta Pots for Your Aloe Vera

You want to use a porous pot for your Aloe Vera plant. This will help dry out the soil after watering. Terracotta is porous and an excellent choice when it comes to choosing a pot for your Aloe Vera plant.

Empty the Accumulated Water under the Drainage Hole

When you water your Aloe Vera plant, you will notice water coming out of the drainage hole and the water will accumulate. It’s okay to let the water sit for a few minutes so the soil at the bottom can absorb the water but after that you need to empty out that water.
