Types of Hedge Trimmers

If you are new to the world of hedge trimmers. There are basically three types of hedge trimmers- gas powered hedge trimmer, corded hedge trimmer and cordless hedge trimmer.

Gas Powered Hedge Trimmers: Pros and Cons

Gas powered hedge trimmers are the most powerful and most versatile.

Gas Powered Hedge Trimmers: Pros

Gas powered hedge trimmers are powerful and can easily cut through thick branches making trimming hedges so easy. Gas powered hedge trimmers are also versatile because you can use them anywhere, there is no cord limiting your reach. It is ideal for big yards because you can reach bushes and hedges that corded trimmers can’t reach.

Gas Powered Hedge Trimmers: Cons

The negative side of using a gas powered hedge trimmer is the loud sound (you need to wear ear protection). Also, I don’t know about you, but smelling gas for an hour or more while doing yard work is not the way I want to spend my Saturday morning! Another negative with gas-powered hedge trimmer is also the mess associated with refilling the gas and the need to drive to the gas station to refill the gas can. All that extra work is just a little too much for me. I think gas-powered hedge trimmers are really better for professional landscapers.

Corded Electric Powered Hedge Trimmers: Pros and Cons

Corded Electric Powered Hedge Trimmers: Pros

Corded electric-powered hedge trimmers are great because you can use them for hours and not run out of power. It’s also pretty powerful, usually more powerful than the cordless hedge trimmers. I think corded hedge trimmers are great if you have a small yard and the hedges and bushes you are trimming are within easy reach.

Corded Electric Powered Hedge Trimmers: Cons

However, if you have a big yard you may have a hard time reaching the bushes furthest from the house since you are limited by the length of your extension cord. I used a 200 feet extension cord for my corded hedge trimmer however, it was always so daunting to have to deal with reeling and unreeling extension cords!

Cordless Hedge Trimmers: Pros and Cons

Cordless Hedge Trimmers: Pros

You’ve probably figured this out by now, I’m partial to cordless hedge trimmers. I think once you’ve tried cordless hedge trimmers, it’s hard to go back to using the gas-powered or corded hedge trimmers. The main advantage of cordless hedge trimmers is the ease of use. There is no prep work involved- no unreeling of the extension cord and no refilling of the gas. Just grab the cordless hedge trimmer, go outside and start trimming! (just make sure you have a fully charged battery pack) The time saved with not having to deal with gas cans and extension cords make it so worth it to use cordless hedge trimmers.

Cordless Hedge Trimmers: Cons

The only downside with cordless hedge trimmers is that they are not as powerful as gas-powered hedge trimmers and corded hedge trimmers. You also risk running out of power with the battery pack. If you want to cover a big area, then you should have more than one battery pack on hand.

Best Cordless Hedge Trimmers

Below are a few cordless hedge trimmers in the market. They are all kind of similar, I recommend you base your decision on the brand. Since the battery packs are interchangeable with other tools in the same brand it will be more convenient for you to stick to the same brand family. For example, if most of your tools are Black and Decker then I’d buy the Black and Decker hedge trimmer so you can have more battery packs.

Black and Decker 20 Volt-22 Inch Cordless Hedge Trimmer

If you are looking for an easy cordless hedge trimmer, then this Black and Decker 20V hedge trimmer is a good choice. It’s fairly lightweight at a little over 7 lbs. And cuts through tough branches pretty easily. The PowerCut feature gives it an extra blast of power for tougher branches. The blade is 22 inches long which is long enough to get the trimming done quickly. The 20V battery pack is rechargeable and interchangeable with other Black and Decker products. Each batter pack lasts around 2 hours long. Buy extra battery packs if you need more time.

Ryobi 18 Volt-22 Inch Cordless Hedge Trimmer

The Ryobi 18V cordless hedge trimmer is also another option. It is a little heavier though at 9 lbs as compared to the Black and Decker Cordless hedge trimmer but it does a good job trimming hedges and bushes in one go. The battery pack is rechargeable and interchangeable with other Ryobi tools. I think choosing between the Black and Decker or Ryobi will depend on the other tools you have at home. If you have mostly Ryobi tools then I’d stick with a Ryobi cordless hedge trimmer so you have more battery packs.

If you have a lot of Makita tools, then I’d go with a Makita cordless hedge trimmer so you stay within the same brand to share battery packs.
